The operative word in the title of today’s article “Why I Started a Network Marketing Business” is WHY.
If you are in network marketing or MLM or even the affiliate marketing business, it won’t take long for someone to ask you “What is Your Why?” Oh my goodness, if I have heard it once, I’ve heard it a thousand times. It would drive me crazy to hear it even once more if it wasn’t so darn important. And believe me when I say, it is important! So important, that I might go so far as to say that the answer to that question is the foundation for ANY business, not just network marketing.
Today, I’m going to open up a little bit and tell you why I am doing this. My reason will be different than yours and the next person’s and so on. One thing I love about this question is there is no right answer.
Why I Started My Online Business
I started my online business approximately 2 years ago. My primary reason for doing this was to give my wife a break. When I met Missy she was working 2 jobs to support her family. Since we have been together, she has always worked in very demanding positions as a Registered Nurse and BSN. Some of her positions were physically demanding while others have been more mentally demanding. Regardless, she has been wanting to to go part-time for a while now. I knew I wanted to do something to make an additional income so I could help make her dream come true. Considering Missy is a nurse, she makes pretty good money. So, taking a minimum wage job wasn’t going to help much. I knew I had to do something different that would give me the ability to earn an income based on my efforts, rather than the number of hours I worked.
The second part about starting my online business has to do with retirement. Let’s just say I have not done the greatest job of saving for retirement and considering I want to retire in the next 10 years or so, I needed to find something I would be able to do and enjoy after retiring from my “day job” that would still continue to bring a substantial income into the house.
That brings me to the next part of my story…
Why I Started a Network Marketing Business
Prior to starting my business in the fall of 2015, I had been exposed to network marketing on 2 separate occasions.
The first was back in the early 1990s with a company you may have heard of called Amway. Back then there was no internet, there were really only a few personal computers around, and if you had one, you were lucky. We did the Amway business in people’s living rooms on a whiteboard. Every Friday night for the better part of a year, I drove about 100 miles each way back to my home town because that’s where my support system was and that’s where my business was growing. We would do what was called “showing the plan” which required drawing a bunch of circles on the white board so folks could see how much money they could make. Friday nights turned into mid week meetings and so on and I just kept driving the miles in hopes of a better life for me and my family. I poured my heart and soul into that business and I never regretted the time spent because the knowledge and experience I gained has carried me through many facets of my adult business life and even prepared me for this new world of online network marketing.
The second was about 5 years ago. At that time, I bounced around from company to company, and a few bad decisions later I was pretty much done before I really even got started. Truth be told, I got in with the wrong group of people and when that support group collapsed, I went right along with them.
Ultimately, I learned a couple important things from these ventures…
- The world of network marketing held truly unlimited possibilities if I was willing to learn, work hard and be persistent. See Persistence Will Get You Everywhere.
- I could actually earn an income based on my efforts rather than the number of hours I worked.
- I love networking, meeting new people and helping others.
So, when you combine one of the greatest business models of all time (network marketing) with unlimited earning potential, and doing something I love, it didn’t take me long to realize this business is where I need to be.
Oh, and I may have forgotten to mention that I really, really want a lake house. This one will do just fine…
To your success,
